No, no solo son las personas que van de puerta en puerta invitándote a convertirte. En su sitio web se describen como “Personas de distintos países, culturas y lenguas con el mismo objetivo, de honrar a Jehová”. Además consideran un privilegio que se les llame cristianos, ya que intentan imitar a Cristo. Pero entonces… ¿quiénes son los Testigos de Jehová?
Todo empezó cuando Carlos T. Russell, quien fue criado en una iglesia presbiteriana, comenzó a interesarse en el tema de la segunda venida de Cristo y empezó a asistir a una iglesia adventista. A sus 18 años organizó una clase en Pittsburgh, Pensilvania para estudiar la Biblia, apegándose a las predicciones de Guillermo Miller, convencido que podría calcular y predecir con hechos la segunda venida de Cristo.
Afirmaba que Cristo vendría a la Tierra en espíritu y no en cuerpo por lo que en 1884, formó la organización internacional “La sociedad de Tratados de la Torre del Vigía”. Sin embargo, fue hasta 1931 que se empezó a conocer a sus seguidores como “Testigos de Jehová.”
Principales Características de los Testigos de Jehová
Cuando el juez Rutherford, su sucesor, escribió más de 100 libros publicados en 80 idiomas, su iglesia creció considerablemente. Hoy en día, fieles a sus enseñanzas,
- Son políticamente neutrales, es decir, no apoyan a ningún partido o candidato ni ponen su fe en que el gobierno puede salvarlos.
- No saludan a ninguna bandera, ya que su reino es de Dios y no de los hombres. Ante esta postura, sufrieron persecución en tiempos de guerra, ya que no aceptaron entrar al servicio militar.
- Hasta 1961 no se realizaban transfusiones sanguíneas, que es la característica más controversial (aunque sí pueden donar órganos o recibirlos). Esta postura se basa en el texto bíblico Génesis 9, 3-4:3 Todo lo que se mueve y vive, os será para mantenimiento: así como las legumbres y plantas verdes, os lo he dado todo. 4 Pero carne con su vida, que es su sangre, no comeréis.
- Omiten celebrar cumpleaños, fiestas, Navidad y Pascua, ya que son consideradas parte del paganismo.
- No utilizan imágenes de santos ni de la Virgen o Cristo, rechazando así los dones milagrosos, como el hablar en otras lenguas cuando están en oración.
- Practican practican la disciplina. Si un miembro falla, debe confesar su falta ante “tres ancianos”, quienes son llamados así no por su edad si no por el grado de autoridad de la congregación. Si es necesario lo censurarán y pedirán que cumpla algunas actividades con el fin de reconciliarse con Jehová. Si no muestra arrepentimiento, será expulsado o desasociado. También se rompen los lazos familiares y amistades que pudo haber tenido en los “Salones del reino”, lo que a muchos los lleva a vivir en depresión, alcoholismo e intentos suicidas por el rechazo que viven de parte de padres, hijos y amigos.
- Afirman que están a punto de vivir el Armagedón y los que no son creyentes Dios arderán en el infierno.
Lo que conmueve a muchas personas es la entrega de los testigos de Jehová, ya que cada uno es un ministro responsable para promover su religión, yendo de casa en casa, entregando el Atalaya y dando clases gratuitamente.

El rechazo hacia los Testigos de Jehová
En 2018, el gobierno de Rusia confiscó 14 propiedades en San Petersburgo, ya que había quedado exento del pago de impuestos; alegaron que pertenecía a una de las sedes de Estados Unidos declarando inválido el contrato que tenía 17 años vigente.
Rusia los señaló como secta extremista, peligrosa y de fe ilegal, acusándolos de destruir familias. Limitó sus derechos civiles, por engaño y explotación, al permitir la muerte en su familia y ahondar en la violencia.
Tienen un historial de profecías fallidas. En 1914, 1915, 1918, 1925 y 1942 predijeron el fin del mundo y aseguraron que en 1925 Isaac y Abraham resucitarían de entre los muertos. Afirmaron que en 1975 sería el fin del mundo.
Sólo habrá 144,000 salvos según sus creencias, lo que confunde a muchos, pero en su página web señalan que ese es el número de los que reinarán con Cristo en los Cielos sobre el Paraíso terrestre, el cual estará habitado por una cantidad indeterminada de personas felices que pertenezcan a esta religión y adorarán a Dios.
